Half of Israel’s Worst Terrorists Freed - Shocking statistics brought to light
274 life-sentenced killers walk free: What’s next for the Hamas prisoner deal?
In a significant development during the first phase of a hostage exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas, 274 terrorists serving life sentences have been released from Israeli prisons, according to Arab sources cited by Kan News.

This release marks a substantial step in the deal, though approximately 300 terrorists with life sentences still remain behind bars. The exchange highlights the complex and contentious nature of negotiations aimed at securing the release of hostages while balancing security concerns.
Data from the Israel Prison Service provides a broader picture of the current detainee population, revealing that 9,406 terrorists and security detainees are being held across Israeli facilities. Of these, 1,486 have already been convicted and are serving sentences, while 2,960 are in the midst of criminal proceedings but have yet to be convicted. Additionally, 3,405 individuals are classified as administrative detainees, held without formal charges under security provisions. This diverse group underscores the scale of Israel’s efforts to manage threats posed by terrorism and related activities.
The ongoing war in Gaza has further swelled these numbers. The Israel Prison Service reported that 1,555 terrorists from Gaza were apprehended during the conflict, reflecting intensified military operations in the region. Beyond the prison system, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are currently detaining around 1,800 Gazans in separate facilities, also arrested amid the fighting. These figures illustrate the significant influx of detainees linked to the hostilities, adding pressure to an already strained security apparatus.
The release of 274 life-sentenced terrorists—roughly half of those serving such terms—has sparked debate over the implications for Israel’s security and the broader hostage negotiations. While the deal has facilitated progress in returning captives, the remaining 300 lifers and thousands of other detainees signal that the issue remains far from resolved. As the conflict persists, the balance between concessions and containment continues to shape Israel’s strategy in this high-stakes exchange with Hamas.
