Three years after the October 7 massacre, the IDF intelligence analyst from Unit 8200 who warned before the attack that Hamas was prepared for a large-scale surprise offensive received official recognition Sunday. Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir presented a commendation to "Sergeant V" at a senior command conference convened to review and internalize the lessons from the events that led to the war in Gaza.

Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir presents commendation to Sergeant V, the intelligence analyst whose alert on Hamas readiness was ignored before the massacre

"It was important to me to invite Sergeant V here," Zamir said at the conference. "V is a clear example of intellectual courage and professionalism. In our organizational culture, we must not allow complacent discourse, intellectual tyranny, or the suppression of critical thinking. We as commanders must ensure that we demand freedom of expression from our people as a vital component of our operational culture and our frameworks."
"The entire IDF is in constant readiness. We are all on guard," Zamir added. "Our duty is to prevent surprise and to prepare for surprise. We are in a period of tension and alertness, and each person in his sector must be alert and ready. We are building our future and moving forward. Much appreciation to you and to all IDF units for the hard work. Only our actions will speak."
