Knesset

First call after the election

Outgoing MK Naor Shiri names the coalition member who reached out to him first after the last Knesset election (and it wasn't who you'd expect)

Outgoing Yesh Atid MK Naor Shiri: “The First Call After the Election Was From Shas’s Yinon Azoulay”

Naor Shiri, a Yesh Atid MK who will soon be leaving the Knesset, sat down with Radio 103FM to talk about what comes next.

"I'm in the middle of dropping the kids off at kindergarten and school, it's nice to get to spend a bit of time with them," Shiri said. "I'm planning to be at home, to take a breath. It's been four very intense years. A moment to breathe, and then I'll make decisions." He added: "There were frustrating hours, but you have to get up. The story isn't about Naor."

Shiri, who is still young by political standards, reflected on his years in the Knesset. "I've been in politics from a young age, I was in Likud youth from the age of twelve. But this Knesset brought us endless wars in an insane situation. We fought in the Finance Committee for everyone's money, for the whole State of Israel."

He said he is following the coalition negotiations closely. "We're in a very complicated period, and we're confident it will end very well," he said. "People will do their work and do what's needed to form a government here. I always remember the formation of the change government. We were all sitting at home, it was Operation Guardian of the Walls, and then, within 24 hours a statement went out that a government had been formed."

Asked whether he has friendships with members of the current coalition, Shiri answered: "I don't do behind the scenes. Friends? It's hard for me with this coalition, but I had colleagues: Yinon Azoulay and Moshe Gafni, they're people I knew how to have real conversations with. The first phone call after the election? That was Yinon Azoulay who called me."
