Suspected election interference:

Shin Bet vs AG over Arab MK probe

Roni Bar wants Ahmad Tibi, Mansour Abbas and two others investigated, but the probe has not begun, the attorney general is demanding evidence first, and the Shin Bet has not yet handed over the case files to police

Shin Bet Chief Demands Probe of Four Arab MKs; Attorney General Blocks it Pending Evidence

Shin Bet director Roni Bar is demanding that Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara authorize a criminal investigation under caution of four senior politicians from the Arab parties, i24NEWS correspondent Avishai Greenzweig reported Tuesday evening. Despite the demand, the investigation has not begun, because the Shin Bet has not yet transferred the case materials to the Israel Police.

According to the report, the four politicians Bar wants investigated are Ta'al chairman MK Ahmad Tibi, Ra'am chairman Mansour Abbas, Balad chairman Sami Abu Shehadeh, who was disqualified from running in the elections, and a fourth senior MK whose name cannot be published.

The report states that in the case of the fourth MK, there is broad agreement that significant evidence exists against him. However, regarding the other politicians, the attorney general has demanded to receive evidence before she will authorize their investigation under caution.

But according to the report, as of now Baharav-Miara's demand has not been met, except in the case of the fourth MK. At the same time, an agreement has been reached to establish a joint investigative team between the Shin Bet and the Israel Police, which is supposed to examine the suspicions.

Despite two days having passed since the agreement to establish the joint team, the Shin Bet has still not transferred the investigation materials to the police. As a result, the investigation has not gotten underway, even though the Shin Bet chief has already presented his demand to investigate the four politicians.

An additional detail revealed in the report concerns an incident that occurred during the meeting. According to Greenzweig, at one point Bar referred to the possibility of also investigating the Ra'am chairman, but had difficulty remembering his name and said: "We will also ask to investigate the MK, what's his name, Mansour Abbas."

At this stage, alongside the demand to investigate the four politicians, questions remain regarding the transfer of the investigation materials and the granting of the required approvals for their investigation under caution.

The Shin Bet, the Israel Police and the attorney general's office did not respond to the report.
