Rav Stav: "I made a terrible mistake"

Rav Avraham Stav, who recently revealed he voted for one of the change bloc parties, addressed speculation about a government backed by Arab parties

Rav Avraham Stav spoke on Tuesday on Galei Israel radio and addressed the possibility that leaders of the "change bloc" would form a government with the backing of Arab parties.

"If in the end a government is formed in which Eisenkot and Liberman and all that group sell out all the values they committed to, to the chareidim, to the Arabs, and establish some kind of non-Zionist government that exists only out of hatred for Netanyahu, if something like that happens, I'll say I made a terrible mistake in my reading of the map and the trust I placed in them. It would be shocking," Rav Stav admitted.

After the election results were published, Rav Stav sent a letter to the leaders of the change bloc in which he revealed that he had voted for them. "To the honorable Knesset members-to-be Gadi Eisenkot, Naftali Bennett and Avigdor Liberman: I am writing to you now because I gave you my vote in the recent elections," he shared in a candid social-media post, "I did not do so out of complete identification with your positions, whether on security and settlement matters or on the judicial system ... I did so out of a belief that the State of Israel needs change, the kind that the current coalition in its narrow form is incapable of leading, and because in the basket of options there did not appear to be a party that carried the banner of unity and was likely to pass the electoral threshold".

Rav Stav stressed that his central expectation from the bloc's leadership is to act with leadership and political maturity in this hour of emergency: "I am aware that you did not promise me unity, but you promised me hope, you promised me change, and you promised me that you would put the good of the state before everything."

He added: "I will find it hard to forgive you if you drag us into repeat elections. That would be a reckless gamble on your ideologies, after all, you are not guaranteed to reach similar achievements again, and above all, contempt for the urgent needs of the people of Israel, who are still in a war for their existence."

He closed his appeal with a firm call to demonstrate flexibility and nobility of spirit for the sake of healing the society: "Sit in closed rooms until smoke comes out; join forces with all Knesset members who believe in the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state; make concessions; show nobility of spirit; give trust; and find the solution that will lead us to repair, healing and unity. Exactly as you promised."
