IDF Eliminates Senior Hamas Intel Chief who held Omer Shem Tov Captive

The IDF and Shin Bet eliminated Jamal Abu Saeed, head of operations in Hamas’s military intelligence apparatus, in an airstrike in Gaza City on Sunday, the two agencies announced Wednesday evening in a joint statement. Abu Saeed held hostage Omer Shem Tov in captivity during the war. The IDF released footage of the strike.

According to the statement, Abu Saeed held a series of senior positions in Hamas over the years. He oversaw the training of Hamas operatives outside the Gaza Strip, served as commander of an anti-tank battalion and was responsible for military specializations in Hamas’s Central Camps Brigade. He also managed the terror group’s relations with various countries and was regarded as a significant source of knowledge within the organization.

The IDF and Shin Bet said that throughout the war, and particularly in recent weeks, Abu Saeed advanced terror plots against IDF troops and Israeli civilians and worked to restore Hamas’s capabilities, while systematically violating the ceasefire. He was eliminated in an aerial strike to remove the threat he posed, the statement said.

Abu Saeed is the second terrorist linked to Shem Tov’s captivity to be killed this year. In June, the IDF and Shin Bet eliminated Sabaei Abu Hasna, a Nukhba operative who infiltrated Israel on October 7 and took part in holding Shem Tov. Abu Hasna appeared alongside Shem Tov at the staged Hamas ceremony marking his release, where Shem Tov was made to kiss him on the forehead.

Shem Tov was abducted from the Nova music festival on October 7 and released on February 22, 2025, after more than 500 days in Hamas captivity. During his captivity, he managed to recite kiddush every Shabbat for two months using a small bottle of grape juice he received from a captor. He recently visited the resting place of the Lubavitcher Rebbe in New York together with other freed hostages.

The strike is one of a series of targeted operations in recent days against Hamas operatives involved in planning attacks and rebuilding the group’s military capabilities.
