The battle over control of the Knesset and internal tensions in Israel's political system are reaching a new peak. Channel 13 correspondent Michael Shemesh reports that Naftali Bennett, chairman of the Yachad party, intends to demand the position of Knesset speaker as part of the political negotiations to form a coalition.
According to the report, Bennett wants the senior role to go to a candidate from his own Yachad party or, alternatively, to another mutually agreed candidate, as long as it is not a member of Gadi Eisenkot's Yashar party. The report further indicates that at this stage, Bennett has not expressed support for his running mate Yair Lapid's candidacy for the Knesset speaker position, and may be interested in advancing a different candidate.
The report brings to the surface the tension prevailing among various actors in the political system over the identity of the next Knesset speaker, a role that serves as a central power hub in managing legislative processes and coalition negotiations.
