"Maritime Sovereignty is at Stake"

ANCHORS DOWN: ZIM Shipping Workers Launch Nationwide Strike to Block Foreign Sale

ZIM workers have declared a total strike to block a $3.5 billion sale to a foreign consortium involving German, Saudi, and Qatari interests. Warning that 900 jobs and Israel’s maritime sovereignty are at risk, the union has halted all operations.

The employees of ZIM, Israel’s largest shipping company, have officially shut down all company operations. The move comes as a response to the collapsed negotiations between the workers’ union and management regarding the planned sale of the company to a foreign conglomerate.

900 Jobs on the Line

Oren Kaspi, Chairman of the ZIM Workers' Union, issued a dramatic statement announcing the work stoppage. Kaspi warned that the proposed sale threatens the livelihoods of nearly a thousand employees and compromises Israel's independent shipping capabilities.

"900 employees are at risk of being fired, and our country's maritime sovereignty is in danger," Kaspi stated. "We love our workplace and believe in it; that is why we are striking, to protect ZIM."

Kaspi further accused the Board of Directors of using "divide and conquer" tactics and violating every "red line" set by the union. He emphasized that the struggle is particularly focused on protecting older employees who have dedicated their lives to the company but are still years away from retirement.

A Strategic Asset in Crisis

The union highlighted ZIM’s critical role during recent national emergencies, including the "Swords of Iron" war and recent military operations against Iran. During these periods, ZIM was responsible for:

The Controversial Sale

The strike centers on a $3.5 billion tender won by a consortium consisting of the German shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd and the FIMI Fund.

Of significant concern to the workers is the fact that approximately 25% of the purchasing shares are linked to Saudi and Qatari ownership. While the tender includes provisions for Israel to maintain "special control status" over the company, the union argues that breaking ZIM into smaller components under foreign hands is a direct hit to national security.

All ZIM operations are halted as of this afternoon. The union maintains that they will not allow the company to be dismantled, insisting that the fight is for both the workers' future and the strategic independence of the State of Israel.
