Viral video footage captures a dramatic moment at a Caribbean beach: beachgoers standing directly behind an MD-80 passenger aircraft as it powers up for takeoff were thrown about by the powerful jet exhaust.
The McDonnell Douglas MD-80, a twin-engine airliner from the DC-9 family, has a distinctive design feature that made this incident particularly intense. Unlike modern aircraft that mount engines beneath the wings, the MD-80's two jet engines are positioned at the rear of the fuselage, on either side of the tail. This configuration gives the aircraft its characteristic appearance and concentrates noise and jet blast at the tail section. When the aircraft began accelerating for departure, the force of the engine exhaust hit spectators who had positioned themselves to film the moment. Sand whipped into the air, loose objects became projectiles, and people struggled to remain upright as some were pushed toward the water. The blast was powerful enough to create significant turbulence in the shallow coastal waters, causing waves to break forcefully along the shoreline.
