U.S. Deploys Weapons in Space as New Military Era Begins

Outer space has long ceased to serve merely research and broadcasting purposes. It has evolved into an active, complex battlefield with a global market valued at approximately $63.4 billion.

The Trump administration officially confirmed in recent days that it has positioned operational weapon systems in orbit around Earth. This move, designed to protect American strategic assets from real threats posed by potential adversaries near and far, primarily China and Russia, marks the final transition of space warfare from the experimental and classified technology phase to open, operational combat in the skies above, backed by massive space budgets.

Billions Headed to Space

The race is led by major powers with extraordinary investments.

The United States, which operates more than 8,500 active satellites, runs the Space Force branch and is advancing the "Golden Dome" project, a multi-layered defense system with billions of dollars in investment that includes physical interceptors in space.

Russia, meanwhile, presents an aggressive posture that includes developing nuclear weapon capabilities for space deployment capable of disabling entire satellite constellations, alongside operating "inspector satellites" that maneuver dangerously close to Western satellites and ground-based laser systems to blind reconnaissance satellites.

The Serious Competitors in the Race

Alongside Russia, China represents the primary competitor in the race, developing advanced anti-satellite capabilities, satellites equipped with robotic arms to capture enemy satellites, and the "Skynet" project to track up to 1,000 targets simultaneously.

The orbital battlefield is not limited to the big three alone. Additional nations such as India, with its SBS-III program for 52 reconnaissance satellites and "bodyguard satellites", France, Germany, and Japan are investing billions of euros and dollars in developing protected satellites, space defense squadrons, and active defense capabilities.

The Israeli Angle

Israel is also establishing its position as a key regional and global player in space defense. Although still far behind in the space race and successful launches, Israel is considered an expert in desert observation from space and a world leader thanks to long-range missile defense systems operating at the edge of space and beyond the atmosphere, alongside its advanced "Ofek" satellite series. Israel's most ambitious space project to date is the Arrow missile system, which has proven its effectiveness in Israel's combat rounds with Iran and its ability to serve as both a defensive and offensive system, intercepting threats to Israel from near and far.

Against the backdrop of global tensions and growing threats, Israel is focusing on expanding its deterrence and defense capabilities while increasing its space defense budget to approximately one billion dollars in the coming years, aiming to develop advanced systems including offensive laser technologies designed to operate from space and protect Israeli infrastructure across the vast universe.

From this survey of the evolving space domain, it appears safe to bet with high probability that the next war will move from the ground far beyond Earth's borders, into a reality previously seen only in science fiction films, chief among them "Star Wars."
