Six months to elections

Macron hits record low in French polls

New poll shows only 16% of French citizens satisfied with President Emmanuel Macron's performance, down seven points in a month, as weeks of protests and October 17 riots deepen political crisis | Prime Minister Lecornu also losing ground

Replace him? Emmanuel Macron

A new poll in France points to another collapse in public confidence in the president, with only 16% of citizens satisfied with his performance. Within a single month, Macron has lost seven points of support, with particularly sharp drops among young people and business owners. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is also losing altitude against the backdrop of the country's crises.

French President Emmanuel Macron is struggling to cope with a mounting wave of public dissatisfaction: 83% of French citizens are dissatisfied with his performance, an extraordinary figure that illustrates the depth of the political and social crisis in the country. This emerges from a monthly poll by the CSA institute for the French newspaper JDD, published on Sunday.

According to the poll, only 16% of French citizens are satisfied with the president's performance, a drop of seven percentage points within a single month. The figures are being published against the backdrop of social tension, youth protests, and the fallout from the violence and looting that took place on October 17.

The damage to Macron's support is especially pronounced among young people: the satisfaction rate among 18- to 24-year-olds has plunged by 23 points in a month. According to the report, the protest that began with blockades of high schools has expanded into broader public unrest.

Small business owners and tradespeople are also turning their backs on the president. Following the violence and looting, which hit many businesses, this group recorded a 22-point drop in satisfaction with Macron within a month.

The crisis deepened further following a deadly terror attack that occurred on Friday in the town of Trappes in the Yvelines department. Macron arrived at the scene but was met with jeers and insults from some of those present. According to the assessment cited in the report, the incident is likely to weigh even more heavily on his public standing.

Prime Minister also losing support

The crisis does not stop with the president. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is also recording a drop in public support, with only 22% of French citizens satisfied with his performance, a decline of five percentage points within a month.

The figures point to widespread dissatisfaction outside the major cities as well. Against the backdrop of the agricultural crisis, 77% of residents in departments outside urban centers are dissatisfied with the prime minister, an increase of six points. In rural communities, the dissatisfaction rate reaches 79%, up three points.

Among young people, Lecornu's position has deteriorated further: 73% of 18- to 24-year-olds are dissatisfied with his performance, an increase of five points compared to the previous poll.

The economic crisis and confrontations over the state budget for 2027 are also damaging his standing. Among retirees, satisfaction with the prime minister dropped by eight points, and the dissatisfaction rate in this group now stands at 73%.

The picture emerging from the poll is one of a broad crisis of confidence in the French leadership, with Macron facing an overwhelming majority of citizens dissatisfied with his performance, and Lecornu also struggling to stem the decline in support against the backdrop of social, economic, and security crises.

In recent days, as the streets of France fill with chaos week after week, many French citizens are calling on the president to take the historic step and announce his resignation.
