From the Octagon to the Podium

Trump Offers UFC's Dana White Press Job

The president announced the surprise pick on Truth Social, asking White to bring along six UFC fighters to protect us from the crazy left

President Donald Trump has offered the job of White House press secretary to Dana White, the president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. White, who was in London for a UFC event, responded to the offer and said he is flying to Washington to meet with Trump on Monday.

Trump announced the unusual pick on Saturday on Truth Social, where he wrote that he had offered White the position. The president went further, suggesting that White bring along several of the world's best-known UFC fighters to serve as assistants.

"I am pleased to announce that the great Dana White, a fighter and a real fighter, has been offered the position of Press Secretary of the United States," Trump wrote. He then named six fighters he wanted on the team: Khabib Nurmagomedov, Islam Makhachev, Justin Gaethje, Daniel Cormier, Amanda Nunes, and Kayla Harrison.

"We need these people to protect us from the crazy left," Trump wrote, before closing with a direct appeal: "Dana, please take the job!"

White's response drew attention of its own. Before answering reporters' questions, he posted a photo on his Instagram account showing himself behind the podium in the White House briefing room, with the caption: "Next chapter."

Later, at a press conference in London after the UFC event, White was asked about Trump's offer. "I'm flying to Washington, D.C., right now," he said, adding that a meeting with the president has been set for Monday.

Asked how he would balance the possible White House role with his many commitments in the sports world, he smiled and said: "Yeah, I already have a lot of jobs." He declined to detail his conversations with Trump on the subject, adding: "I'm sure we'll have more to talk about after the meeting."

White is considered one of Trump's closest associates outside the political world. The two have known each other for many years, and their relationship strengthened after White publicly backed Trump during his presidential campaigns. He spoke at Republican National Conventions in 2016, 2020, and 2024.

Last June, the partnership between the two reached an unusual peak when a UFC event was held on the South Lawn of the White House, as part of celebrations for America's 250th anniversary and near Trump's 80th birthday. The event included an octagon set up near the president's residence and participation by senior administration officials.

The offer comes during a period of upheaval in the White House staff. The press secretary position has been without a permanent holder since Katie Zacharia left in October after only five days in the role. She had replaced Karoline Leavitt, who left the position in August. At the same time, Trump announced additional staff changes at the top of the administration, with Stephen Miller replacing Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff.
