Trump Debuts New Presidential Jet

Inside Trump’s First Flight on the New $400 Million "Air Force One" Gifted by Qatar

Shaking off political criticism, Donald Trump inaugurated his new luxury Boeing 747 with a bold flight to South Dakota, revealing striking new colors and a major foreign policy update.

Trump's New Air Force One

U.S. President Donald Trump officially inaugurated his first flight on Wednesday aboard a newly customized presidential aircraft—a luxury Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar, valued at $400 million.

Before boarding the plane at Joint Base Andrews, President Trump addressed reporters, touching upon ongoing diplomatic talks with Iran. "The denuclearization of Iran is coming along very well," Trump said. Turning his attention to the upgraded aircraft, he added, "This is going to be the first flight of what I think will be the greatest commercial aircraft ever built. Nobody has ever seen anything like it."

The New "Flying White House": Design, Costs, and Controversy

The modified Boeing 747-8, previously used by the Qatari royal family and now designation-coded by the military as part of the interim VC-25B Bridge initiative, underwent an extensive overhaul to meet the stringent security and communication requirements of the U.S. presidency.

  • The New Livery: Moving away from the traditional robin's-egg blue and white design used since the Kennedy administration, the aircraft features Trump's preferred color scheme: a dark navy blue belly, a deep red stripe, a gold stripe, and a white top.
  • Interior Luxury: The cabin boasts high-end luxury upgrades, including plush carpeting, lie-flat seating, premium wood paneling, and presidential seals embroidered onto the seatbelts.
  • Public and Political Criticism: The acquisition has sparked a political firestorm in the United States. Critics have questioned the ethics of accepting an extraordinarily expensive gift from a foreign government, as well as the substantial costs involved in retrofitting the aircraft with military-grade communication and defense systems.
  • The Administration's Defense: The U.S. Air Force confirmed that the aircraft meets all rigorous presidential security standards. Trump dismissed the criticism, arguing that using the gifted aircraft saved American taxpayers a tremendous amount of money and stating, "This was a plane given as a gift from a country that treats us very well."

Destination: South Dakota and the U.S. Semiquincentennial

The aircraft's maiden presidential voyage was bound for South Dakota, where President Trump is scheduled to attend a dedication ceremony for a new presidential museum honoring former President Theodore Roosevelt.

The visit aligns closely with the administration's core messaging, which focuses on "American Greatness" and the ongoing celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of United States independence. The aircraft is expected to serve as an interim transport for the president while Boeing completes the official, next-generation Air Force One fleet, which has faced production delays pushing their delivery to 2028.
