In a demonstration of the ongoing relationship between the White House and the Orthodox Jewish community, a delegation of Chabad-Lubavitch rabbis met with President Donald Trump and his advisors ahead of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

The delegation, which often visits the White House in connection with the annual "Education and Sharing Day" proclamation, offered the President a traditional prayer for the welfare of the government, often recited in synagogues worldwide. The meeting, which took place on Monday, the same day the President held a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, underscored the high level of access Chabad maintains to the executive branch.

The Prayer for the Rulers

The blessing, shared publicly by the official Chabad social media channel, is known in Hebrew as the HaNoten Teshua and invokes divine protection and counsel for the nation’s leadership.

The text of the blessing offered to President Trump and his advisors reads:

“He Who grants salvation to kings and dominion to rulers, He Who is the Master of rulers, Who gave King David a kingdom and sovereignty, may He bless, guard, protect, help, exalt, and greatly magnify the President of this country and all officers of the government.”

The prayer concludes with a plea for the leadership’s guidance to serve the Jewish people and for the ultimate redemption:

“May the King of kings in His mercy inspire them and all their advisors to act with kindness toward us and all Israel. In their days and in ours, may Judah be saved and Israel dwell securely, and may the Redeemer come to Zion. So may it be His will, and let us say, Amen.”

Context of the High Holidays

The timing of the meeting is significant, as the Jewish people are now in the Ten Days of Repentance, a period culminating in Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. This is a time of deep personal reflection and prayer for a favorable decree for the coming year. Offering the prayer for the government at this time highlights the community's reliance on divine providence for political security and peace.

During the meeting, President Trump reportedly spoke with the rabbis about the global work of Chabad emissaries and emphasized his "unwavering commitment" to the safety and security of Jews both in America and abroad, an issue that has been central to his public statements, particularly in the aftermath of the October 7, 2023, attacks.

The Chabad movement, known for its extensive network of outreach centers globally, maintains a policy of political neutrality but frequently engages with leaders across the political spectrum to advance its mission of Jewish education and community service
