In a decisive diplomatic move, the United States under President Donald Trump has called on countries to avoid participation in an upcoming United Nations summit focused on advancing a two-state solution to the Israeli Palestinian conflict. According to a classified cable sent by the US State Department, Washington “opposes any step that seeks to unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state” and considers such moves “contrary to American interests and potentially damaging to relations.”

The summit, scheduled to take place in Paris later this month, has been led by French President Emmanuel Macron in coordination with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. It aims to generate international support for formal recognition of a Palestinian state. The American response has effectively undermined that effort, just days before the gathering.

US officials emphasized that the administration views the summit as an attempt to impose a solution on Israel while ignoring its security concerns. “We will not support actions that sideline Israel or encourage unilateral diplomacy,” said one official familiar with the matter.

Macron Faces Global Embarrassment

This American intervention is a serious blow to Macron, who had invested significant political capital in advancing this summit. The French president has recently taken a harsher stance toward Israel, publicly criticizing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and threatening punitive steps over Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

Macron’s rhetoric has included allegations that Israel is blocking humanitarian aid and violating international law, statements that were swiftly condemned by Jerusalem. Netanyahu responded by accusing Macron of echoing false narratives promoted by Hamas and choosing “to stand with terrorists rather than with the victims of October seventh.”

Now, with the United States openly rejecting the summit’s legitimacy, Macron’s initiative risks becoming a symbol of diplomatic overreach and miscalculation. The rebuke was delivered not behind closed doors but on the world’s diplomatic stage.

A Clear Signal to Europe and the Middle East

The Trump administration’s stance sends a clear signal to other European nations considering similar steps. In recent weeks, Spain, Ireland and Norway have unilaterally recognized a Palestinian state, moves that the US views as undermining the peace process and emboldening extremist actors.

By contrast, the US is reinforcing its support for Israel and insisting that peace can only be achieved through direct negotiations between the parties. “Diplomatic recognition cannot substitute for dialogue,” said a senior US official. “No country should reward rejectionism and incitement with statehood.”
