"Our focus is on the service members involved and their families," AFRICOM said in an official statement. "Additional information will be provided as it becomes available."

Authorities have not yet specified whether the soldiers were on foot, in a vehicle, or engaged in a specific training maneuver at the time they lost contact.

The African Lion Drills

African Lion 2026 is the largest annual joint exercise conducted by U.S. Africa Command. This year’s drills bring together thousands of personnel from the U.S., NATO allies, and African partner nations across Morocco, Ghana, Senegal, and Tunisia.

The exercise is designed to simulate realistic combat scenarios and strengthen international military cooperation. The Cap Draa region, where the soldiers disappeared, is known for its harsh, undulating desert landscape and proximity to the coast, presenting significant challenges for search teams.

The Pentagon has not yet released the identities of the missing soldiers pending notification of their next of kin.
