Campaign by decree

Rav Maya: Likud Voters Lose Olam Haba

The eldest member of Shas's Council of Torah Sages issued the declaration against anyone casting a Likud ballot, as the party steps up its rhetoric before the October 27 election.

Shas' Rav Maya: Likud Voters Have No Share in Olam Haba

Rav Maya shlita, the eldest member of the Council of Torah Sages, Shas's rabbinic decision-making body, has declared that "anyone who votes for Likud has no share in the World to Come," Amit Segal reported.

The statement is the sharpest yet in an escalating Shas campaign ahead of the October 27 election. Shas has been a key partner in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition. Likud is not the party's only campaign target.

Shas and United Torah Judaism have been working to stem the flow of chareidi votes to Otzma Yehudit chairman Itamar Ben Gvir. In an interview with Kikar HaShabbat, Ben Gvir accused chareidi MKs and operatives of hypocrisy.

"All day they're running a campaign trying to bring me down, why? I was always there for them!"

Likud is also competing for chareidi voters. Netanyahu met Moti Leitner, chairman of the new Haredi Public party, and pressed him to quit the race before election day. Leitner's party runs independently of Shas and UTJ. Likud's concern is that his party could draw votes from Netanyahu's supporters and still fall below the electoral threshold.
