Owners of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are reporting color changes in their devices' finish, just weeks after the phones went on sale. According to GSMArena, users on Reddit have posted images showing faded areas on burgundy models, alongside some complaints about black models as well.
The fading begins around the camera lenses and then becomes visible along the aluminum frame, users say. The devices launched on September 18, meaning the complaints surfaced within roughly three weeks. It is not yet clear how many units are affected or whether this is a widespread defect or isolated cases.
Familiar problem from last year
GSMArena compares the reports to complaints that emerged after the iPhone 17 Pro launch. At the time, color changes were reported mainly in the cosmic orange finish, and also in some deep blue units. According to UA.NEWS, which cited the report, Apple replaced affected devices under warranty last year.
There is no official statement yet indicating Apple will adopt a similar policy this time.
Is the sun to blame?
One theory that has emerged is that exposure to ultraviolet radiation is causing the finish to change. GSMArena notes that some users noticed fading after their devices spent time outdoors. This remains speculation: Apple has not confirmed the cause, and no test results have been presented proving a link to sun exposure.
In the meantime, users are suggesting the use of a case to reduce the frame's exposure to sunlight, though it is unclear whether this will actually prevent the issue. GSMArena notes that the burgundy unit in its own possession shows no color change and adds that it has been kept carefully and has not spent much time outdoors.
