After a global casting hunt that saw 30,000 thousand young hopefuls from the UK and Ireland, HBO has unveiled its new Hogwarts heroes. Dominic McLaughlin steps into Harry Potter’s iconic round glasses, Arabella Stanton takes on the brilliant and bushy-haired Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout embodies the loyal, redheaded Ron Weasley. While McLaughlin and Stout are fresh faces, Stanton has already charmed audiences as the lead in Matilda: The Musical on London’s West End.

Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, who’ll helm multiple episodes, couldn’t hide their excitement: “These three young actors are pure magic! We’re thrilled to share their talent with the world and thank the thousands of kids who auditioned, it was a joy to discover so much potential.”

This decade-long series, executive produced by J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman, will faithfully adapt each book, starting with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Expect deep dives into the wizarding world’s rich details, with each season dedicated to one book.

The show will also feature big names like John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, with Nick Frost slated to play the lovable Hagrid.

Filming for the series is set to begin this summer, with the show expected to premiere in 2026. It will stream exclusively on HBO Max in markets like Germany, Italy, and the UK, and promises to enchant both new fans and longtime Potterheads.

Rowling shared her enthusiasm: “I’m excited for this adaptation to bring the depth and detail only a long-form series can offer.”

In the early 2000s, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint became global stars for their portrayals of the same characters in the successful film series. The question on many minds is whether these new actors will achieve similar success and international fame.
