Former NFL players Shannon Sharpe and Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson sparked widespread condemnation after invoking classic antisemitic tropes during a recent episode of their popular podcast Nightcap.

The discussion began with criticism of Jewish streamer Adin Ross for admitting he uses the N-word while singing rap lyrics privately. Sharpe argued that derogatory terms targeting Black people are common in media and music, but similar slurs against other groups, specifically Jews, are avoided. He described Jews as "the most powerful community in the world" and referenced "another country that has a white and blue flag with a star on it" (clearly alluding to Israel). Johnson then responded: "Oh, they own every damn thing!" Sharpe agreed emphatically, reinforcing the claim that "they own everything."

The exchange echoed longstanding antisemitic stereotypes about Jewish control over media, finance, and global affairs, a trope historically used to fuel hatred and violence.

Critics, including the Anti-Defamation League and American Jewish Committee experts, described the comments as dangerous and irresponsible, noting that such language from influential figures (with millions of followers) normalizes hate and endangers Jewish communities.

The episode remains available on YouTube and podcast platforms, amassing significant views. As of December 13, neither Sharpe nor Johnson has issued a public apology or response to the backlash.

Social media reactions have been intense, with many expressing disappointment in the Hall of Famer Sharpe and Johnson, while a minority defended the remarks as "truth-telling." The incident highlights ongoing concerns about antisemitism in public discourse, particularly amid heightened tensions related to the Israel-Gaza war.

This controversy adds to a series of high-profile incidents involving public figures and antisemitic rhetoric in recent years.
