Ed Sheeran Blames Venues for Macklemore Ouster, Jewish Group Responds

Ed Sheeran broke his silence Tuesday on the removal of rapper Macklemore from his American tour, issuing a detailed statement that placed responsibility squarely on venues and producers rather than himself. The British pop star explained that Macklemore was dropped from the remainder of the tour after the rapper used his opening-act platform to deliver a sharp political speech during warm-up shows at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

"I am appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine," Sheeran opened his social media statement. "The suffering and pain being caused to both sides is a human tragedy. There are too many wars around the world causing unimaginable pain, and none of them are acceptable."

"Venues Threatened to Cancel the Shows"

Sheeran said he had agreed to Macklemore's request to join the tour last year because he respects him as an artist, and allowed the rapper to choose his own setlist. But after Macklemore performed his controversial song "Hind's Hall" before more than 80,000 fans at the New Jersey stadium, a crisis erupted.

"Venues where I am scheduled to perform later in the tour notified me that they would cancel the shows if he continued to serve as the opening act," Sheeran revealed. According to the singer, he was told the stance stemmed from the manner in which Macklemore delivered part of his message during the performance, not from the message itself.

Sheeran said he tried to find a solution together with the production team, but ultimately Macklemore was removed from the rest of the tour. "This was not my decision," Sheeran emphasized, adding that he respects Macklemore's right to hold political positions.

Israeli-American Group: "Not the Time to Save Myself"

The Israeli-American Council fired back with a sharp response to Sheeran's statement, noting that "this is not the time to Save Myself", a reference to Sheeran's beloved 2017 song about taking care of yourself before caring for others.

"Sheeran talks in his response about wanting his concerts to be a 'safe space' and about how his audience doesn't come to a 'political forum', but when the moment came to take responsibility for what happened on his stage, he chose to emphasize that the decision to remove Macklemore was not his," the organization stated.

The IAC stressed that Macklemore didn't merely call out political slogans, but presented the war in a one-sided manner while erasing the massacre that led to it, a massacre in which Hamas terrorists murdered, raped and kidnapped more than 1,400 people in a single day. "This is not just 'criticism of Israel.' This is a message that crosses the line between legitimate political criticism and antisemitism," they clarified.

The organization's statement concluded: "We welcome the removal of antisemitic rhetoric from the tour."
