Britain's Green Party voted Sunday to declare that "Zionism is racism," passing the motion 56 percent to 44 percent at the party's annual conference in Brighton. Only 1,835 of the party's more than 200,000 registered members took part in the vote.

The approved resolution describes Zionism as "a political ideology calling for the establishment of a Jewish state based on ethnic nationalism" that, according to the motion's backers, displaces non-Jewish populations. The document calls for the creation of a single Palestinian state with "equal rights for all," including the Jewish population. The resolution makes no mention of the State of Israel and does not reference a two-state solution.

Foreign Ministry: 'Stopped functioning as a party'

Israel's Foreign Ministry issued a sharp response following the vote. In an official statement, the ministry said the Green Party "stopped functioning today as a political party and became a terror-supporting body."

Jerusalem said the resolution legitimises armed struggle, effectively calls for a Palestinian state from the river to the sea, and equates Zionism with racism. The Foreign Ministry added that "this is a text that crosses the boundaries of political discourse, and as long as it is not removed, it remains a stain on the history of the United Kingdom."

The ministry concluded by calling on all British parties, led by Labour, "to immediately and unequivocally disavow this distorted text."
