Nine children between the ages of one and 13 were removed from a home in Athena, Ohio, after police discovered them living in what authorities describe as shocking conditions. The children were allegedly confined behind cages, denied food and water, and subjected to severe abuse. Two adults have been arrested on charges of child endangerment and placing children's lives at risk.
The case came to light after child welfare services passed information to police regarding suspected abuse. During a search conducted on October 13 in the small town of Athena, officers found a home infested with insects, poor sleeping conditions, and insufficient living space. At least four of the children were housed in a small shed on the property.
According to court documents, the children were forced to stand for extended periods with their backs against a wall, while nails placed on the floor marked where their feet were to remain. Some were held behind cages or barriers, at times as punishment and at times without any stated reason.
The two suspects, 37-year-old Jonathan Farr and 32-year-old Jacqueline Coleman, were arrested and charged with child endangerment. The court set bail at $150,000 for each. Farr denied the allegations, stating: "It's not true. I didn't keep anyone in cages. I love my children and would die for them."
All nine children have been placed in the care of child welfare services, and police continue to investigate the case. Authorities have not ruled out filing additional charges.
