Suspected abuse of toddlers

Ariel daycare workers' arrest extended

Two suspects, a caregiver and the daycare director, will remain in custody through the weekend; a third suspect faces another hearing tomorrow. The daycare has been shut for 60 days as police review security-camera footage.

Court Extends Arrest of Daycare Workers in Ariel Abuse Case

A court in Israel extended the arrest Wednesday of two women suspected of abusing toddlers at a private daycare in Ariel, in Samaria. The caregiver will remain in custody until Monday, October 26; the daycare director until Sunday, October 25. A third suspect, whose arrest was extended until Thursday, will appear in court tomorrow for another hearing on her detention.

The investigation was opened after police received a complaint of suspected abuse at the facility. Ariel police obtained a court order to seize security-camera footage from the daycare, and after reviewing the recordings and completing initial inquiries, investigators said they found evidence supporting the allegations against the three women.

All three suspects were arrested, and the daycare was ordered closed for 60 days. Police said they treat any suspicion of harm to the vulnerable with the utmost seriousness and that the investigation is continuing with all necessary steps to clarify the circumstances of the case.

The Ariel case is the latest in a series of suspected abuse incidents at Israeli daycare facilities in recent months. In June, a caregiver in Jerusalem was arrested on suspicion of abusing two toddlers under her supervision; according to the allegations, she shouted at the children, cursed them, and ignored their crying and basic needs.

In another case, an indictment was filed against a daycare director in Netanya who was accused of dozens of acts of brutal assault against toddlers. The indictment alleged that she slammed the children into a mattress, shook them violently, pushed their heads to the floor, and used severe physical force against them.

Police emphasized that the allegations in the Ariel case remain under investigation and that all three suspects are presumed innocent. The investigation is ongoing with the aim of establishing the facts and, if the suspicions are confirmed, bringing those responsible to justice.
