Eilat police have broken up a sophisticated illegal gambling operation that ran systematically on the city's boardwalk, according to details of a wide-scale enforcement operation released Wednesday by the police.
The operation was the result of close cooperation between police detectives and additional enforcement bodies including the Tax Authority, the Labor Ministry and the State Attorney's civil division, aimed at building an evidentiary foundation against those involved and stamping out the illegal activity.
The police investigation revealed that behind the cup games stood an organized group whose members operated with careful division of roles and full coordination. Alongside those running the tables, the ring planted fake gamblers who knew at every moment where the ball was hidden.
While some appeared to bet normally, others deliberately and knowingly chose the wrong cup in order to lure innocent passersby into joining the game, creating an illusion of high winning odds and ultimately causing them to lose their money. This method was designed to disguise the fraud as an apparently fair game of chance, when in reality it was a sophisticated trap meant to extract money from passersby and tourists visiting the city's main commercial and tourist area.
At the conclusion of the covert phase of the investigation, Eilat district detectives raided the homes of five suspects Monday morning and arrested them for questioning. Dramatic footage from the raid, released with this report, captures the moment of truth for forces in the field: the video shows police detectives arriving outside the entrance door to one of the targets, equipped with specialized breaching tools.
The detectives work decisively and deploy the equipment to force entry, until the door opens by force. Immediately after the breach, officers storm carefully and quickly inside the apartment in order to take control of those inside and prevent any attempt to flee or destroy evidence connected to operating the gambling network.
Following their arrest, the five suspects, including a minor involved in the affair, were brought before Eilat Magistrate's Court, which ordered their remand extended until October 29, 2026, for the continuation of investigative procedures. Police emphasize that the fight against illegal gambling offenses continues with determination, since beyond the financial harm to innocent citizens, the phenomenon is often accompanied by additional criminal offenses and harm to public order, and further enforcement operations on the matter are expected.
