Shabbat Recipe

Honey-Glazed Smoked Chicken for Shabbat

A show-stopping entrée that requires minimal active work and fills your home with an incredible aroma, everything goes into one pan and the oven does the rest

Honey-glazed chicken with roasted potatoes for Shabbat

Looking for a main course that will wow your Shabbat guests without spending hours in the kitchen? Honey-glazed smoked chicken with crispy potatoes delivers exactly that, a festive dish combining rich, sweet flavors that looks impressive on the table while demanding very little hands-on work. Everything goes into a single baking dish, and the oven takes care of the rest.

The combination of sweet silan with smoky paprika creates a rich, caramelized sauce that coats both the chicken and potatoes. Fresh thyme adds an aromatic fragrance that fills the house, while crushed garlic contributes depth of flavor that completes the picture. This is a dish perfectly suited for the Shabbat table, classic, dignified, and bursting with taste.

What You'll Need

For this dish you'll need simple ingredients, most of which are already in your kitchen: one kilogram of chicken thighs cut into large pieces, five to six medium yellow or red potatoes cut into quarters, and for the marinade, three tablespoons silan, two tablespoons sweet smoked paprika, four cloves crushed garlic, a quarter cup olive oil, two tablespoons soy sauce, fresh thyme sprigs, salt, and coarse black pepper.

Choosing the right potato variety is critical to the recipe's success. Yellow or red potatoes hold their texture better during the long baking time and develop a beautiful crispness on the outside while staying tender inside. One-pan dishes like this are the perfect solution for Shabbat meals when you want to invest in flavor but not in active cooking time.

Quick Preparation Process

The first step is preparing the marinade: in a small bowl, mix the silan, smoked paprika, crushed garlic, olive oil, soy sauce, salt, and pepper. This marinade is the secret of the dish, the combination of silan's sweetness with the depth of smoked paprika creates a complex, rich sauce that caramelizes beautifully in the oven.

Next, in a wide baking dish, toss the chicken and potatoes with the marinade and scatter the thyme sprigs on top. It's important to ensure all the pieces and potatoes are well coated with the sauce, this is what guarantees the flavors will penetrate every part of the dish. The technique of covering the pan with parchment paper and then aluminum foil preserves moisture during the initial baking.

The pan goes into an oven preheated to 200 degrees Celsius for forty-five minutes. At this stage the chicken cooks slowly and the potatoes soften while absorbing all the flavors from the marinade. Then remove the covering, increase the oven to 220 degrees (or switch to broil mode) and bake another fifteen to twenty minutes until the potatoes are golden and slightly crispy and the chicken develops a beautiful bronzed color.

Practical Shabbat Tip

One of the great advantages of this dish is that you can prepare everything in the pan a day ahead and store it in the refrigerator. That way, before Shabbat begins you only need to put the pan in the oven or warm it on the plata on Friday evening. This makes the dish especially perfect for busy families who want a dignified Shabbat table without sacrificing quality time with family on erev Shabbat.

The dish is ideal for serving alongside a fresh green salad, homemade hummus, or tahini. The caramelized sauce left at the bottom of the pan is perfect for dipping challah or pouring over white rice. This is a dish that combines the familiar, beloved flavors of Israeli cuisine with the preparation convenience that young families need.
