A massive blizzard has paralyzed the Northeast corridor, effectively turning the region into a "no-fly zone" and forcing the cancellation or delay of more than 10,000 flights across the United States. With 41 million people currently under blizzard warnings and a formal travel ban in effect for New York City, major aviation hubs have reached a near-total standstill.
Latest data reveals a staggering shutdown of scheduled operations at the primary airports serving the Northeast. Most facilities are reporting cancellation rates exceeding 80%:
Major carriers have effectively scrapped their schedules for the day as runways remain buried under snow. JetBlue currently leads the industry in cancellations with over 680 flights cut, followed by American Airlines (517) and Delta Air Lines (462).
In response to the historic disruption, airlines have extended travel waivers through February 28, 2026. This allows displaced passengers to rebook without incurring change fees.
However, transportation officials warn that even after runways reopen, it may take several days to clear the massive backlog of stranded travelers. Passengers are urged to check flight statuses from home and avoid traveling to airports until the New York City travel ban is lifted and operations resume.
