Israeli-Owned Fraud Network Exposed

Joint investigation reveals Tel Aviv-based operation defrauded thousands of Australian victims through fake news articles and AI trading promises

Australian Investigation Exposes Israeli-Owned Fraud Network

A joint investigation by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) has uncovered an international investment fraud operation known as the "Sapphire Network," allegedly headquartered in Tel Aviv and active since 2021. The network is accused of stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from thousands of Australian victims through an elaborate scheme.

The operation maintained call centers and payment processing systems across multiple countries, including Bulgaria, Ukraine, Cyprus, North Macedonia, and Israel. Investigators say the network lured victims using fabricated news articles that impersonated Australia's public broadcaster and made false promises about AI-powered trading systems that would generate substantial returns.

Among those affected were particularly vulnerable individuals. One victim, Roger, who was awaiting surgery, was forced to take out loans to pay for medical equipment after losing his savings to the scheme. Another victim, Toby, was convinced to transfer over half a million dollars after landing on a website that replicated ABC's design and showed him fictitious profits.

The fraud followed a sophisticated pattern: operatives collected an initial payment of approximately $350 as a registration fee, which was processed through an Australian company called Trigo XO. While officially registered as selling business leadership courses, the company allegedly served as a front for money laundering. ABC's investigation found that the company's websites had collapsed, and one victim who paid the fee received only a generic 35-page PDF document.

According to testimony from Trigo XO's managers, the controlling owner of the company is Israeli national Shafi Goldberg. Despite his initial denials, he has clear connections to the fraud network: Goldberg serves as a managing partner in GoBe Marketing, an immigration services company whose South African call center was previously found to be involved in processing illegal payments.

Goldberg is also the sole owner of Allegiant Holdings, a Cyprus-based payment processing company operating under the Smart Pay brand, which allegedly handled payment collection from victims. When contacted by investigators, he said he was merely "registered" with the payment company and not involved in its day-to-day operations.

The investigation adds to a growing list of international fraud cases exposed in recent months, highlighting the increasing threat posed by sophisticated scam networks that exploit advanced technology and impersonate trusted institutions to deceive unsuspecting victims.

Australian authorities continue investigating the full scope of the Sapphire Network's activities, with estimates suggesting hundreds of millions of dollars were stolen from thousands of victims worldwide.
