Netanyahu May Demote Barkat on Likud List

Barkat is set to finish 24th in Likud primaries, but PM Netanyahu could use reserved slots to push him to unrealistic 32nd place, echoing 2009 move against Moshe Feiglin

 Netanyahu and Barkat

Controversy continues to swirl around Israel's Likud party primaries results, with the latest drama centering on Economy Minister Nir Barkat's position on the electoral list.

According to political analyst Amit Segal, Barkat is expected to finish the race in 24th place on the list, the final realistic slot designated for candidates from the national primaries. However, Segal notes that this position doesn't guarantee Barkat a safe seat in the next Knesset.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has a long track record of dealing with candidates he considers problematic who land in that final realistic spot. Segal points to the 2009 elections as an example, when Netanyahu created a unique interpretation of party regulations to push Moshe Feiglin out of that position.

This scenario may repeat itself through the reserved slots mechanism available to Netanyahu. If he chooses to place an outside candidate in the 24th spot using his reserved slots, for instance, Michel Buskila from "Tikva Hadasha" movement, and this move would push Barkat down the list to 32nd place, which is considered unrealistic for entering the Knesset.
