IDF Pharmacists Arrested for Medication Theft Investigation

Israeli authorities announced Monday the arrest of two veteran pharmacists on suspicion of stealing tens of thousands of medications designated for Israel Defense Forces soldiers and selling them illegally. The suspects, a chief pharmacist at the Glilot military base and another pharmacist, both employed as external contractors by Israel's Defense Ministry, allegedly turned military pharmaceutical supply into a lucrative private enterprise.

The arrests followed a months-long undercover investigation conducted jointly by the Arzim unit of the Defense Ministry's security division and the Dan District unit of the Military Police Criminal Investigation Division (known by its Hebrew acronym Metzach), with close coordination from the Health Ministry's enforcement division.

According to preliminary findings, the two suspects exploited their positions and access to fraudulently obtain tens of thousands of medications, including sensitive prescription drugs specifically intended for soldiers who needed them. The medications were systematically removed from the military supply chain and sold on the black market, allegedly netting the pair tens of thousands of shekels at the expense of the defense establishment and public welfare.

Defense officials said the investigation is ongoing and that additional aspects of the case are being examined. The arrests underscore the importance of strict supervision over external suppliers in sensitive systems, particularly those related to healthcare and security.

This is not the first time fraud has been uncovered in Israeli public systems. Several months ago, a massive fraud scheme was exposed in Israeli soccer, in which senior figures in the Premier League allegedly defrauded the state through fictitious disability benefit claims over many years, totaling tens of millions of shekels. In that case, lawyers and doctors allegedly coordinated committee appointments and forged documents to establish fake disability percentages.

In another recent incident about two weeks ago, a father and son from Ramle were arrested on suspicion of violent robbery in Holon, in which they allegedly stole hundreds of thousands of shekels from a victim at a traffic light. There too, an undercover police investigation led to the arrests.
