Playing the Long Game: How the New Supreme Leader Plans to Trick the West
A former close associate of Mojtaba Khamenei warns that the new Supreme Leader is a master of deception who views human life as a cheap currency in his pursuit of a religious apocalypse.

In a revealing interview with The Jerusalem Post, Jaber Rajabi, a former classmate and former Iranian official, has warned that the new Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, represents a far more dangerous threat than his father, Ali Khamenei. Rajabi, who lived and studied alongside Mojtaba in the prestigious religious seminaries of Qom, describes the new leader as a "hypocrite" who is far more skilled at lying and manipulation than his predecessor. While the international community may hope for a more moderate turn under a younger leader, Rajabi cautions that any moves toward peace are merely a calculated tactic to gain time and consolidate power. According to Rajabi, Mojtaba’s ultimate goal is not geopolitical stability but the fulfillment of a religious prophecy that involves total regional control and a direct war with Western powers.
A History of Deception and Violence
Rajabi’s insights come from a long history within the regime's inner circle. As a former foreign policy advisor to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and a mediator for Iraqi militias, Rajabi saw the rise of the younger Khamenei firsthand. He describes Mojtaba as having a total disregard for human life. "If he can kill 13,000 of his own people, then he has no problem killing 100,000 in Tel Aviv," Rajabi stated, highlighting the leader's history of brutal internal suppression. He warns that Mojtaba is an "expert at playing the game," knowing exactly how to appear moderate to American and regional leaders while secretly harboring a "deeply religious obsession" with the end of days. This apocalyptic worldview makes him an unpredictable and existential threat to the region.
The Financial Empire and Hidden Power
Beyond his religious zealotry, Mojtaba Khamenei controls a massive, hidden financial empire. Reports estimate his wealth at over $3 billion, with assets spread across London, the UAE, and various European countries. None of these assets are officially in his name, allowing him to bypass international sanctions and fund the "Axis of Resistance" through a complex web of shell companies. Rajabi himself claims to have survived an assassination attempt by poisoning after he began speaking publicly about Mojtaba’s financial network. "Mojtaba came to me and said he would investigate the matter, but I am sure it came from the House of Khamenei," Rajabi recalled, illustrating the ruthless nature of the man now leading the Islamic Republic.
Tactical Retreats and the "Mahdi" Prophecy
The most dangerous aspect of the new leader, according to Rajabi, is his belief that he has a special role in accelerating the return of the 12th Imam, Muhammad al-Mahdi. This messianic obsession drives his foreign policy, making traditional diplomacy nearly impossible. Rajabi warns that if the US or Israel sees Mojtaba taking "steps backward" or calling for peace talks, it is likely a ruse to buy time for his nuclear program or to rebuild his depleted military. "He wants to mislead the Americans and the region to gain trust," Rajabi explained. For Mojtaba, the current war is not just a military battle but a spiritual one, and he is willing to sacrifice any number of lives to achieve his theological vision of a Middle East ruled by Tehran.
