The Iranian security apparatus has plunged into a state of panic following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei by Israel at the start of the current war, enforcing a total public ban on his son and apparent successor, Mojtaba Khamenei. Citing an immediate and existential threat to his life, intelligence officials in Tehran have strictly forbidden the younger Khamenei from appearing at his father's mass funeral ceremonies, revealing deep fears over foreign tracking capabilities.
The internal crisis was made public through an interview broadcast by Iran International, which cited official statements from Hakim Elahi, the supreme leader's official representative in India. Speaking to India Today, the envoy disclosed that Iranian security agencies placed an absolute veto on Mojtaba's participation in the mourning events, warning that stepping into the open under current conditions would be an absolute gamble on his life.
According to the intelligence details revealed by Elahi, Mojtaba Khamenei expressed a strong desire to go out to the public, actively participate in the funeral procession, and personally lead the traditional Islamic death prayer, known as the Salat, over his father's body. The representative noted that during his visit to Iran last week, he met with close associates who spoke directly with the son and confirmed his desire to take a public role.
However, the regime's intelligence and protection agencies made it clear that they are entirely incapable of providing optimal protection under current conditions. The primary reason for these extreme preventative measures lies in the advanced intelligence and technological capabilities attributed to Western countries and Israel.
Tehran security officials explained to the leader's son that the regime's enemies possess highly advanced technological means, including precise facial recognition, close surveillance, and real-time location tracking. These tools effectively transform any massive public gathering into a lethal trap for high value targets.
The panic in Tehran intensified further after it was highlighted that the Israeli defense minister has publicly declared that Mojtaba Khamenei is high on the Israeli security establishment's assassination list. The Iranian representative acknowledged this reality during his media appearance, admitting that the situation is indeed extremely complex and dangerous for the new leadership.
The security lockdown has also disrupted the traditional transition of spiritual and political power within the Islamic Republic. When asked whether Ali Khamenei had left explicit instructions in his will regarding the identity of the individual who should lead the funeral prayers, Elahi responded that the late leader did not name a specific person.
Under normal and proper circumstances, the newly selected supreme leader is the one expected to lead the public in these prayers. However, under the tense and sensitive security conditions gripping Iran, this protocol is entirely unfeasible, forcing the regime's top echelon to hide their chosen successor even at the cost of his absence from his own father's public farewell.
