While he began by being conciliatory towards Israel and simply requesting that the IDF leave southern Syria, al-Sharaa has become increasingly combative, demanding the Golan Heights in exchange for any peace treaty and also speaking of the great injustice done to the Palestinians in 1948.

For its part, Israel has repeatedly stated that it intends to remain in southern Syria for at least the next year, at least until the situation "stabilizes."

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar has told multiple European interlocutors that while the Syrian President presents himself as a moderate, the government is stacked with Jihadists, not moderates or minority representatives. The new government will thus be tested by "deeds, not words."
