Threats from Ankara

Turkish admiral: We'll crush IDF like insect

A retired Turkish admiral has issued stark threats against Israel, declaring that in a direct confrontation, "the Turkish military will crush the Israeli military like an insect."

Prof. Cihat Yaycı, former chief of staff of the Turkish Navy and architect of Turkey's "Blue Homeland" (Mavi Vatan) maritime doctrine, made the remarks in an interview with the Turkish media platform GZT. Analyzing security maps of the Middle East during the interview, Yaycı added that in the event of a clash, "millions of Turkish men will march south." He accused Israel of conducting a psychological operation designed to drag the region into sectarian wars and seize control of critical trade routes in the Red Sea.

Yaycı is no fringe figure in Turkey. The senior officer developed the "Blue Homeland" doctrine, which seeks to expand Turkey's maritime sovereignty in the Mediterranean. However, since his retirement in 2020, he has served as an independent researcher and does not officially represent Turkey's Defense Ministry or the military high command.

While his statements align closely with President Erdoğan's combative rhetoric, security and strategy experts are quick to point out that these are words, not operational threats. The reasons are multiple: first, there is no shared border between the two countries, and a ground confrontation is impossible without crossing through Syria or Lebanon, a scenario that would be extraordinarily complex and dangerous.

Second, Turkey is a NATO member, and a direct clash with Israel, which enjoys strong American backing, could devastate Turkey's economy and its relations with the West. The statements are aimed primarily at inflaming Turkish public opinion and reinforcing a nationalist image.

In recent months, Turkey has stepped up military activity in the region, but in different ways. Turkey has shifted to continuous launches of cheap drones toward Greece, replacing costly simulated "dogfights" between manned F-16 aircraft. The goal: intelligence gathering, testing Greek defense systems, and economically wearing down Athens.

At the same time, Turkey is operating its intelligence services in the region in cooperation with local actors. Recently, Turkish and Syrian intelligence carried out a joint covert operation in which Ali Kayali, also known as "the Butcher of Banias," was abducted from his home in Beirut and smuggled into Syria.

The bottom line: this is a verbal show of force by a retired senior officer as part of the battle for consciousness in the region, not a declaration of war or a realistic operational scenario.
