Strategic deployment

Egypt's Rafales based far from Israel

The Egyptian Air Force's main Rafale base sits west of Cairo, not in Sinai, revealing a multi-front strategy aimed at Libya, Ethiopia and the Red Sea, not Israel

For years, Israeli security analysts have assumed that Egypt stations its most advanced air assets directly opposite the Israeli front, citing a lack of alternative infrastructure. A closer look at the Egyptian Air Force's actual deployment reveals a completely different strategic reality.

The main home base for Egypt's French-made Rafale fighters is Jabal al-Basur Air Base (also known as al-Burijat), located deep inside Egyptian territory northwest of Cairo, a vast distance from the Sinai Peninsula and the Israeli border. This choice is not the result of technical constraints, but a clear expression of a broader strategic doctrine.

With a combat radius of approximately 2,000 kilometers, aircraft taking off from west of Cairo can easily reach distant theaters including Libya, the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandab straits and even Ethiopia for any operational need and without requiring forward bases.

Alongside upgrading this base, Egypt has invested billions of dollars in recent years developing a modern network of bases across the country: Marsa Matruh and Sidi Barrani bases facing the Libyan border in the west, Aswan base in the south, and the strategic Berenice base on the Red Sea enabling complete control over international shipping lanes.

Behind this massive air power buildup stands a distinctly multi-front strategy. First, the pursuit of strategic independence bypasses longstanding American restrictions on advanced arms sales through procurement from France, Rafales and SCALP cruise missiles. Second, Egypt faces complex security challenges in the second and third circles.

These include threats from Libya, the Houthis in the Red Sea, and the crisis with Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Alongside this, despite the stable peace treaty and close security cooperation with Israel, the military establishment in Cairo continues to view the IDF as the region's highest technological benchmark, exemplified by F-35 stealth fighters, and is unwilling to fall behind.

Aviation and security experts emphasize that deploying the Rafale force in central Egypt represents a calculated and precise choice: flexible air power, independent and with genuine multi-theater operational range. Anyone who continues to focus exclusively on "the Israeli front" is completely missing the broader strategic picture of the giant power to the west.

The Egyptian deployment also reflects the changing geopolitical reality in the region. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi recently instructed the Egyptian military to maintain "the highest levels of alert and combat readiness," against the backdrop of what he termed "unprecedented regional challenges and transformations." The directive was issued at a meeting of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces at the Strategic Command Headquarters in the New Administrative Capital.

According to official Egyptian statements, the president discussed regional and international developments and their impact on national security, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high readiness to defend the homeland and its resources. The directive comes against a backdrop of ongoing tensions on several fronts, beyond the war in Gaza, instability in the Red Sea and the conflict in Sudan, particularly notable is the escalation in the Horn of Africa and especially the strained relations with Ethiopia over the Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile.
