The wait is over. "Chicago Med" returns for its twelfth season this Wednesday, October 7, and the doctors of Gaffney Chicago Medical Center are coming back with a full slate of 21 episodes, a premiere built around a shooting, and an Israeli face in the emergency department.
The season opener is titled "Shots Fired," and it earns the name. It centers on the aftermath of a shooting at a wedding, which sends much of the action straight back into Gaffney's ER. Gabrielle Carteris guest-stars as the mother of the groom.
Fans who have spent the summer recovering from the finale will get answers. Dr. Dean Archer and Dr. Hannah Asher are now parents to a baby girl, and they have to work out what that means after Archer's confession of love went unreturned. Sharon Goodwin is fighting for her job after a board member demanded her resignation, and showrunner Allen MacDonald has made clear she will not go quietly. "If you want a fight, that's what you're going to get," he said of her mindset going into the season.
There is heartbreak on the schedule too. Dr. Caitlin Lenox is coping with a terminal diagnosis while pursuing a romance with Dr. Mitch Ripley, and Dr. John Frost is working through grief. A new doctor is also joining the staff.
The core cast is back: Steven Weber, Jessy Schram, Luke Mitchell, Sarah Ramos, Darren Barnet, S. Epatha Merkerson and Oliver Platt.
And for Israeli viewers there is one more reason to tune in. Shani Atias, the Haifa-born actress, will guest-star as Violet, a woman who arrives at the hospital unconscious and in life-threatening condition as doctors suspect meningitis. It is the same illness that ended Atias's own IDF service two weeks before she was due to finish a squad commanders' course.
"Chicago Med" airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. Eastern on NBC, leading off the One Chicago lineup ahead of "Chicago Fire" and "Chicago P.D." Episodes stream on Peacock the next day.
