A Step Toward Freedom After 584 Days
WATCH: Edan Alexander released from Hamas captivity, on his way back to Israel
Edan Alexander, held captive by Hamas for 584 days, is now with the Red Cross in Gaza, en route to meet IDF forces for his transfer to Israel. The handover marks a critical step toward his reunion with family and receiving medical care in Tel Aviv.

After 584 grueling days in captivity, Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander, 21, is nearing freedom following Hamas’s announcement on May 12, 2025, that he was handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Gaza. Captured during the devastating October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks while serving in an elite infantry unit near the Gaza border, Alexander is believed to be the last living U.S. citizen held hostage in the enclave. An Israeli official confirmed at 18:41 IDT that the handover process had begun, marking a pivotal moment in the protracted Israel-Hamas conflict. Of the 251 hostages taken, 59 remain in Gaza, with up to 24 believed to be alive, underscoring the ongoing crisis.
The release comes amid intense diplomatic and military developments. Israel has established a “safe corridor” to facilitate Alexander’s transfer but has not agreed to a ceasefire, maintaining pressure on Hamas. Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer credited the breakthrough to “relentless military pressure exerted by our brave IDF forces.” A senior Palestinian official, speaking to the BBC, framed the handover as a goodwill gesture ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s Middle East visit, set to begin on May 13, 2025. Trump celebrated the development as “great news” on Truth Social, while Hamas suggested the release could pave the way for a humanitarian aid deal, particularly amid Gaza’s 70-day Israeli blockade.
Egypt and Qatar have lauded the release as an “encouraging step” toward broader ceasefire negotiations. However, Israel’s security cabinet has authorized expanded military operations in Gaza if no comprehensive hostage deal is secured by the end of Trump’s visit, signalling persistent tensions. As Alexander’s family gathers at the Re’im military base, joined by supporters in Tel Aviv’s “Hostage Square,” the nation holds its breath for his safe return. The private nature of the handover, with no public ceremony and footage release contingent on family consent, reflects a focus on the family’s privacy after their 19-month ordeal. The plight of the remaining hostages continues to drive calls for a lasting resolution.
