Military commentator Avi Ashkenazi revealed on 103FM that Operation "Gideon's Chariots," aimed at defeating Hamas in the Gaza Strip, has a set end date in mid-July 2025. Yesterday (Sunday), Ashkenazi noted that the operation, approved by the Israeli cabinet a month ago, targeted capturing 75% of Gaza, pressuring Hamas for hostage releases, and dismantling the group’s infrastructure and capabilities. However, he stated, "The progress is probably not at the level we need."

Despite repeated government assertions of pursuing a "total defeat" of Hamas, Ashkenazi’s claim suggests a defined timeline for concluding the operation.

Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, addressing IDF commanders after the operation’s approval, emphasized the mission’s urgency: "We will act tirelessly to return the hostages, defeat and subdue Hamas, and destroy its capabilities." He acknowledged the unprecedented strain on reservists, mobilized for over a year and a half, and urged commanders to maintain morale and determination.

The operation’s timeline contrasts with earlier plans known to some officials, which projected a 45-day campaign to conquer Gaza and topple Hamas. As of now, over 600 days into the conflict sparked by the October 7, 2023, massacre, the IDF has not fully defeated Hamas, raising concerns about strategic clarity and leadership. Critics, including former Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, have accused the government of repeating past mistakes, such as arming Gaza clans to counter Hamas, potentially creating new threats to Israel’s security.

No official confirmation of the mid-July end date has been issued by the IDF or government. The cabinet’s decision-making process remains under scrutiny, with calls for a state inquiry to investigate failures leading to the October 7 attack and to redefine Israel’s security strategy.
