Operation Gideon's Chariots

A comprehensive overview of Israel's major military operation in Gaza aimed at securing hostage releases and dismantling Hamas

Operation Gideon's Chariots is an ongoing major military offensive launched by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the Gaza Strip. The operation's primary objectives are to secure the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas and to significantly degrade the militant group's capabilities within Gaza.

The escalating operation has seen the IDF carry out over 160 airstrikes against Hamas targets across the Gaza Strip within a 24-hour period. The strikes have targeted Hamas military compounds, rocket manufacturing sites, and underground tunnels used by the group. The IDF has mobilized reserve forces and deployed ground troops along the Gaza border, raising the possibility of a ground invasion.

Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, have stated that the operation aims to either force Hamas to accept a hostage release deal on Israel's terms or completely eliminate the group's remaining forces in Gaza. The hostage situation has been a longstanding issue, with Hamas holding Israeli civilians and the remains of IDF soldiers captive for years.

The operation has drawn criticism from some Israeli ministers and families of the hostages, who argue that allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza without securing releases first could weaken Israel's negotiating position. However, others view the aid as a strategic necessity to avoid a humanitarian crisis that could undermine the operation's goals.

Tensions have also escalated with the Houthi militia in Yemen, which has threatened missile and drone attacks on Israeli airports in response to the Gaza offensive. Israeli authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant, although Home Front Command guidelines remain unchanged.

As the operation continues, the IDF has issued evacuation orders for certain areas in Gaza, indicating the potential for further escalation. The international community has called for restraint and a return to negotiations, but Israel remains resolute in its demands for the hostages' release and the dismantling of Hamas' military capabilities.
