IDF Spokesperson: “Hamas Is Losing Control Over Gaza

In a powerful and wide-ranging press briefing on Tuesday, IDF Spokesperson Brigadier General Effi Defrin addressed the latest developments in Israel’s ongoing military operation in Gaza, known as “Operation Gideon’s Chariots.” His statement followed the tragic deaths of three Givati Brigade soldiers who were killed in an ambush in the Jabaliya neighborhood of northern Gaza during the Shavuot holiday.

According to Defrin, the soldiers were attacked by terrorists who emerged from a tunnel shaft hidden within a destroyed building. The attackers placed explosive devices before retreating. “This was an active tunnel used for terror purposes. Its entrance was located inside a destroyed structure near a main route,” Defrin said. “Our forces are continuing to operate in the area, clearing it of threats. Nearly every second house is either rigged with explosives or contains a tunnel shaft.”

During the holiday, the IDF expanded its ground manoeuvre into new areas of Gaza. Defrin confirmed that hundreds of terrorists have been killed so far in the operation, and five divisions are currently active in combat zones. “We are operating under a clear plan to bring back the hostages and to dismantle Hamas rule,” he said.

In a significant claim, Defrin stated that Hamas is gradually losing its grip over the Gaza Strip. “The group’s ability to govern is eroding,” he said, attributing part of this to the new humanitarian aid mechanism, which distributes tens of thousands of food packages directly to civilians each day. “This bypasses Hamas and weakens their control. We’re securing these distribution centers to ensure the aid doesn’t fall into terrorist hands.”

He also addressed growing disinformation being spread by Hamas: “The terror group continues to release false information, which some international media unfortunately echo without proper verification,” he said. He added that during a recent incident in southern Khan Younis, Hamas gunmen fired at civilians who were trying to collect food aid.

On criticism regarding the time it takes for the IDF to investigate incidents and respond to claims of misconduct, Defrin responded, “I am aware of the criticism, but I will not report half-truths. We are conducting thorough reviews and acting responsibly.”

Defrin also confirmed the killing of senior Hamas member Mohammad Sinwar, who had been hiding beneath a hospital among civilians. In closing, he reaffirmed the IDF’s commitment: “We are doing everything necessary to ensure the safe and orderly distribution of aid. Hamas will pay a price for its obstruction and refusal. We will continue expanding our operations until conditions are met to return the hostages and collapse Hamas' regime.”
