The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on Monday that Iyad Abu Yousef, the deputy commander of Hamas's naval police, was killed in a targeted airstrike in central Gaza. According to the IDF, the operation was a result of intelligence gathered by the military and the Israel Navy.

The IDF stated that Yousef was a direct participant in the "October 7 massacre" and was also involved in planning numerous ambushes against IDF soldiers throughout the fighting in the Gaza Strip.

The elimination of Yousef is part of Israel’s intensified operations in Gaza, which have escalated since the renewal of Operation Gideon's Chariots in Gaza City. Just last week, the IDF announced it had struck around 140 targets in a single day, with a statement confirming that

“the forces are eliminating terrorists and destroying military structures that were used by terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip.”

The IDF also reported that approximately 550,000 Palestinian civilians have evacuated Gaza City since the current operation began, despite what the military described as Hamas's efforts to prevent civilians from leaving the area.
