Deadly escape: Driver killed while fleeing from police on Highway 1 today

Jerusalem District police reported that during a targeted enforcement operation, detectives from the Oz police station spotted a suspicious vehicle on Highway 1. When officers signaled the driver to stop, he attempted to escape, first abandoning his vehicle and then running across the highway through moving traffic in both east and west directions, endangering himself and other road users. The driver was subsequently struck by several vehicles and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

Police discovered six undocumented individuals in the abandoned vehicle, who were taken into custody for questioning. Jerusalem District traffic investigators are currently at the scene directing traffic while Oz Station police investigate the circumstances of the incident.

Emergency responders who arrived at the scene reported that witnesses described the pedestrian being hit by a truck and then another vehicle. MDA senior paramedic Ariel Rabbi and emergency medical technicians Chaim Shavit and Yehuda Maklev detailed their rapid response: "We arrived quickly and found the victim unconscious on the road, without pulse or breathing, suffering severe upper body trauma. Despite immediate advanced resuscitation efforts, including chest compressions and ventilation, his injuries were critical and we had to pronounce his death at the scene."
