IDF Extends Reservist Duties for Multi-Front War

The Israel Defense Forces has increased the expected length of reserve duty in 2026 from six weeks to nine weeks, as continued fighting against Iran and Hezbollah places growing strain on available manpower.

The Israel Defense Forces has increased the expected length of reserve duty in 2026 from six weeks to nine weeks, as continued fighting against Iran and Hezbollah places growing strain on available manpower.

An updated “combat chart” reflecting the change was distributed to units following a recent operational assessment. The extension applies both to reservists scheduled for upcoming deployments and, in some cases, to those already serving.

The decision comes as the military faces a significant personnel shortage, with the IDF estimating it needs roughly 12,000 additional troops, primarily in combat roles. Prolonged operations across multiple fronts have placed sustained pressure on both standing and reserve forces.

Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has warned that the burden of ongoing conflicts is increasingly falling on reservists and their families, with repeated call-ups becoming the norm. He has urged the government to advance legislative changes aimed at strengthening manpower, including revisiting the reduction in mandatory service length and updating reserve call-up frameworks.

While broader debates over conscription policy continue, including proposed exemptions for Haredi yeshiva students, the immediate impact of the latest decision is clear: reservists will be required to serve longer periods as the military works to maintain operational readiness during an extended and expanding conflict.
