In light of a series of alarming safety incidents across various military units, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, has ordered the immediate imposition of a safety curfew throughout all IDF units. This decision, announced on Sunday, comes as a proactive measure following a string of dangerous—and in some cases fatal—accidents that have raised significant concerns regarding operational safety and discipline.

The curfew, which is set to remain in effect until at least tomorrow, halts a number of routine and non-essential activities across IDF units. During this period, the focus will shift to comprehensive safety inspections, thorough operational reviews, and intensive safety training. These steps aim to assess existing protocols, identify systemic flaws, and implement immediate corrective measures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all IDF personnel.

The recent incidents prompting this action include the accidental discharge of a round from an armored personnel carrier, the unintentional launching of shells within several units, and multiple vehicle-related accidents—one of which involved a vehicle driving over a mine in northern Israel. Additionally, a tragic mishap occurred when a combat soldier fell into a cistern. Each of these events underscores the pressing need for a coordinated and holistic approach to reinforcing safety standards.

A safety curfew typically includes a variety of precautionary measures, such as suspending select physical training sessions, pausing non-essential missions, conducting in-depth evaluations of weapons and equipment, offering targeted safety briefings, and placing limitations on the movement of certain military vehicles. The goal is to reduce risks during a period of heightened scrutiny and to prevent any further loss of life or injury.

Instituting such a curfew is not taken lightly and generally follows a cluster of serious incidents that may suggest systemic weaknesses within the military’s structure. The final decision to enact it rests with the senior military leadership, highlighting the gravity of the current situation.

This move by the Chief of Staff reflects a clear message: operational effectiveness must never come at the cost of soldier safety. Even in the midst of ongoing combat operations and frequent enemy engagement, the IDF is committed to maintaining the highest possible standards of safety, discipline, and professionalism within its ranks.
