On Eve of 78 Years, Israel Population Stands at 10.2 Million

Israel’s population has grown more than twelvefold since the founding of the country in 1948, when it stood at just 806,000. Since then, approximately 3.5 million immigrants have arrived, though today about 80% of the population are Israeli-born.

As Israel approaches its 78th Independence Day, the country’s population has reached 10.244 million, according to new figures released by the Central Bureau of Statistics.

The population grew by approximately 146,000 over the past year, marking a 1.4% increase. Of that growth, around 110,000 were Israeli citizens and 36,000 were foreign residents.

Jews and other non-Arab citizens make up 7.79 million people, or 76% of the population. Arabs account for 2.157 million, or 21.1%, while roughly 296,000 people, or 2.9%, are classified as foreigners.

Over the past year, about 177,000 babies were born in Israel, while 48,000 people died. An additional 21,000 immigrants arrived in the country.

Children aged 14 and under make up 27% of the population, while around 13% are over the age of 65.

Independence Day will begin Tuesday evening following the conclusion of Memorial Day, with celebrations continuing through Wednesday.
