The IDF's Oketz canine unit has revealed that Scar, one of its most accomplished military dogs, was killed in action during an operational engagement in southern Lebanon after detecting a concealed Hezbollah ambush that would have claimed the lives of Israeli soldiers.
According to a detailed IDF account, Scar was deployed with a Golani patrol force to scan a fortified enemy compound during a complex terrain operation. As the dog approached the position, Hezbollah operatives opened fire and threw grenades at the force. Scar's handler, identified as "Z," called the dog back to safety, and the animal immediately returned through heavy fire—demonstrating the speed and discipline that had defined its operational record.
The Israeli force engaged and eliminated two operatives, then moved to clear the compound. Believing the position was secured, fighters prepared to enter the structure. The unit made the critical decision to conduct one final scan with Scar to ensure no threat remained inside.
What Scar discovered proved decisive. As the dog moved through the compound with his characteristic thoroughness, he detected movement in a nearby trench—two Hezbollah operatives lying in wait, positioned to ambush Israeli forces as they approached the building.
"Thanks to his sense of smell, Scar revealed two other operatives hiding in a nearby trench, ready to ambush our forces as our soldiers arrived," the IDF statement read.
The operatives attempted to repel Scar as he reached their position. The dog engaged the two terrorists without hesitation, fighting through obstacles and obstacles to maintain contact despite overwhelming fire. During the assault, Scar was shot and killed—but his action had exposed the ambush and alerted the force to the danger.
"As a result of his activity, the force was able to identify the terrorists and eliminate them," the IDF said. "Thanks to Scar's activity, his keen senses, and his operational capabilities, the lives of the fighters were saved from a dangerous ambush. Scar was a brave and determined fighter, who acted until the last moment to protect the force."
The Oketz Tradition
The Oketz (Hebrew for "sting") unit has served as the IDF's primary combat dog force, deploying canines in reconnaissance, detection, and close-quarters operations across multiple theaters. Dogs have become increasingly integral to Israeli operations in Lebanon, where complex urban environments, tunnel networks, and fortified positions have made traditional reconnaissance methods high-risk.
During the Israeli crossing of the Litani River, the Oketz Unit operated alongside Golani forces, with multiple dogs participating in clearing operations within underground facilities and fortified positions despite fierce Hezbollah resistance.
The bond between handler and dog forms the core of Oketz effectiveness. Handler "Z" joined the unit in mourning Scar's loss, having served alongside the dog through multiple operational cycles.
"We embrace our fighter Z, who lost a partner in the journey and in battle," the IDF statement said. "May Scar's memory be blessed."
