Mossad Admits: We Lost an Operative Fighting Against Iran
The mysterious death of a 30-year veteran of Israel’s intelligence agency continues to resonate as details emerge of his military-style funeral and the high-stakes meeting that ended in tragedy.

The Director of the Mossad, David (Dedi) Barnea, spoke today (Tuesday) at the memorial ceremony for the organization’s fallen, where he addressed operational activities during the "Lion’s Roar" campaign.
In his remarks, he stated: "During the Lion’s Roar campaign, my thoughts and heart were filled with pride for the character and actions of M., who fell outside of Israel in the line of duty. The operations led by M. combined creativity and deception with high-end technology, significantly influencing the success of the campaign against Iran."
Known only as 'M', one of the Mossad’s most seasoned operatives was killed in May 2023 during a boat capsizing on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, an incident the Italian media described as a high-level summit between Israeli and Italian intelligence services.
'M' perished alongside two members of the Italian intelligence community when their vessel went down during the storm.
A Career in the Shadows
Those close to 'M' describe a man who dedicated 30 years of his life to the Mossad. Despite the secretive nature of his work, he was known among colleagues as a master of human connection.
During the funeral, Mossad Director David (Dedi) Barnea delivered a rare eulogy, offering a glimpse into the personality of the fallen agent.
"I knew him as a professional of the highest caliber," Barnea stated. "He was a man of pleasant manners, a lover of people, kind-hearted, calm, and quiet. I picture him with his constant smile and his dimples."
"A Man of People"
The Mossad chief emphasized 'M's unique ability to navigate different cultures and social circles, a trait critical for elite intelligence work.
"He was a man of people; there were always old and young, foreigners and Israelis around him," Barnea added. "He knew how to speak to everyone in their own language, literally and figuratively, always in a calm and respectful manner."
The Italian Disaster
The tragedy occurred during what was reportedly a professional gathering between Israeli and Italian spies. While the specific nature of the meeting remains classified, the presence of top-tier intelligence officials, wearing masks and hats, at the funeral underscored 'M's significance to national security.
The use of masks and hats by attendees at the Ashkelon cemetery served as a stark reminder that even in death, the colleagues of 'M' must remain in the shadows to protect their identities and ongoing missions.
