Four years after the law requiring police officers to wear body cameras came into effect, it has been revealed that 21% of Israel Police officers are still not equipped with them.

Since January 2019, a new procedure was introduced for Israel Police officers, mandating that field officers be equipped with body cameras to record their activities and interactions with citizens. Now, approximately four years later, a significant gap has been exposed in this critical equipment.

According to the 2023 State Comptroller report, there was a substantial shortage of body cameras within the Israel Police. The report highlights that 21% of police officers still lack body cameras. This shortage affects all police units, including the Border Police (MAGAV).

The report indicates that out of a total of 17,252 officers who were supposed to receive body cameras, only 13,589 were equipped. This means that at least 3,663 officers, who were eligible for body cameras, did not receive them in 2023. The body camera procedure was implemented in the police in 2023, and the police emphasized the importance of the cameras, stating in the operating procedure: "The Israel Police will equip field officers with body cameras, through which they will record interactions with citizens as part of their duties, in order to increase transparency and strengthen public trust in the police, improve interactions between officers and citizens, while restraining all parties involved."

As reported, the significant shortfall in this important equipment has now come to light. It should be noted that Srugim has contacted the police for a response, but as of this time, a response has not yet been received and will be reported when it is available.
