Doubt The Discussion Was Fruitful

Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch, one of the leaders of the Lithuanian Charedi community and a strident opponent of the draft, met today with IDF officials to discuss the matter, according to Ynet.

Ever since the Supreme Court ordered that the IDF draft eligible Charedi men per the law like everyone else, a back and forth debate has taken place as to how to do so.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant reportedly took a hard line and issued thousands of draft notices, while others such as National Missions Minister Orit Strook believes that trying to draft Charedim by force has so far brought very poor results.

Rabbi Hirsch, meanwhile, has led an uncompromising line on the draft, insisting that no Charedi be drafted, even those who are formally part of a yeshivah but who do not learn all day.

He and others have even organized "chizzuk" or strengthening days for such students to encourage them to stay within the fold and not "break" and agree to present at IDF bases for enlistment.
