Showdown With Haredim?
Attorney General Demands Sanctions: "No Compliance with Haredi Recruitment Targets"
The Legal Advisor to the Government informs the Defense Minister that the army did not meet Haredi recruitment targets and demands enforcement actions against draft dodgers

Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara today informed Defense Minister Israel Katz that his ministry is not meeting the defined targets for Haredi recruitment.
In a statement from the Justice Ministry spokesperson, it was said: "There is no compliance with the presented recruitment targets. The government must urgently take action to enforce recruitment obligations against draft dodgers."
Among other things, Baharav-Miara writes to Minister Katz that yesterday (Tuesday) a follow-up discussion was held regarding the implementation of the Supreme Court ruling to cancel the exemption Haredim received from military service, as long as there is no recruitment law in effect.
Security officials have repeatedly emphasized that following the "Swords of Iron" war, a significant expansion of the regular force order is required, and recruiting members of the Haredi public is a vital security need. The current year's recruitment data, as they were told, are far from satisfying the army's needs, the set and presented targets, and the value of equality.
The Attorney General questioned the exemption for the Haredi public on one hand, and the requirement to recruit 400,000 reserve soldiers under Order 8 for three months, on the other.
The Solution - Increasing Enforcement Against Draft Dodgers
According to all professional and legal entities, increasing individual enforcement measures, including revoking benefits from draft dodgers and expanding the range of administrative and economic sanctions on individuals, are essential conditions for filling the army's ranks. In the discussion, representatives from the defense, treasury, and justice systems presented proposals to improve enforcement and additional personal sanctions against draft dodgers, expected to be effective, and the legal aspects arising from this were also discussed.
A significant portion can be immediately advanced, including through a government or administrative decision alone, without legislative requirement. The decision on this matter is at the political level, specifically the government.
